At The Avett Brothers' insistence David Mayfield started his own project, The David Mayfield Parade, after the newgrass band he was playing in, Cadillac Sky, went on an indefinite hiatus in January. Then, soon after, in February, David Mayfield released The Parade on 9th Grade Records, a label which Mayfield co-founded with fellow songwriter Josh Joplin.
Better known for his background work, this Grammy-nominated musician and producer, is a natural frontman with a lot of versatility and a tremendous gift. Mayfield's new album, The Parade, is a list of 11 sincere love songs with an AM rock and vintage country sound and touches of pop and soul and includes two covers -- "Blue Skies Again" off of his sister, Jessica Lea's, latest album and a sibling duet of Don Gibson's lovelorn "Sea of Heartbreak." His James Taylor-like vocals bring a sense of familiarity and comfort to every song on the record, especially on the track "Udine." Whether Mayfield is singing in the Buddy Holly-style rock number "Noreen," the rootsy rocker "I Might Just Pray" with The Avett Brothers, or with Caitlin Rose on the wistful country waltz "Faraway Love," he delivers each song with extraordinary charm, personality and craft.

Awesome article... really dig em
ReplyDeleteDavid Mayfield was my big find of the week. He's done several nice youtube videos. I'm looking forward to hearing the whole album.
ReplyDeleteDavid is great and I'm ashamed of myself for not listening to the album or posting it sooner.
